Costume

When it comes to a Bollywood dance, clothing and costumes are very important elements. To a large degree, costumes determine the “feel” of a dance in a film. If you get the costume right, you can do many things. If the film is a period piece, the role of costumes is essential in determining the feel of that period. If one is trying to create a dream sequence or surrealistic theme, then the choice of clothing will be very different from what is found in real life. If you want to create an erotic sizzle to an item number you can…well, figure that one out for yourself. Costumes can also be used to reflect hot trends, thus reinforcing the topicality of a dance number. Over the years many great artists have done very well in the area of costume design. In recent times Manish Malhotra, the costume designer for films like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Veer Zaara, and Kal Ho Na Ho; Neeta Lula, costume designer for films like Devdas, Mission Kashmir, have made a place for themselves in the history of Indian Cinema. These artists, however, are only part of a long tradition that goes back a hundred years.
