The Animal Exercise

The Animal Exercise, Mind Training, Acting, Acting Basics, Some Acting Basics, Justification and Concentration,This exercise is relatively famous within the techniques of acting. It requires you to humanize an animal’s physicality to recreate a new personality for a character. In other words, the characteristics of an animal have to be studied and used for the portrayal of someone who behaves and displays mannerisms of that creature. For instance, Marlon Brando’s performance in The Godfather, where he plays a Don, who has the instincts and facial appearance of a bulldog or his role in A Street Car Named Desire where the character that he plays exhibits animal-like force.

Decide and choose a wild animal whose looks and behavior have similarities to the looks and manners of your character. Go to the zoo and study the animal’s physical nature. Study how they move, eat, and sleep, in detail. Then at home, try to recreate physically and express yourself using this animal’s characteristics to the best of your ability. Once you have done this for a while, stand up and humanize the animal. You need to work on how it would walk and move if it were human.
